Little Reader

Wow, belly buttons are serious business! I caught this rare moment today as she's reading, rather than eating the pages.

Edith was really into reading one or two months ago. Since she started exploring the world with her mouth, she doesn't really listen to us read anymore. Instead she spends the entire time trying to grab the book so she can get a good bite out of it. So it surprises me that she'll flash a big grin when she sees certain covers, as if those were her favourites.

We used to read the same two books over and over, until Kelvin asked me if we could get some new books (more for his sake, hehe). Edith has all board books and I love the Bright & Early Board Books because they're a good size for little hands to grab, the lines are musical, and the illustrations are wild. Costco sells them for super cheap. I am not sharing my personal children's books collection with her until she stops eating them. I love them too much, sorry Edie!

Her Current Favourites:
  • Sandra Boynton's Belly Button Book and The Going to Bed Book. When we first got them as gifts I looked at the illustrations and thought, yuck! But Edie loves them so I ended up buying a set at Winners. Sadly she does not care for the set, haha serves me right.
  • Dr. Seuss' Ten Apples Up On Top
  • Dr. Seuss' Mr. Brown Can Moo
  • Al Perkins' Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb

On the top of my list is an Oliver Jeffer's story called Lost and Found. It's beautifully illustrated (all his books are) and tells a sweet tale of two dear friends set in a magical but still believable world. I cried at the end of the book, haha.

I hope Edith will grow to love books. We can hang out, two little nerds in the family room corner.

Do you have a favourite children's book to recommend? For Edith and/or for me?

  1. Oh my goodness, your blog is amazing! You are definitely a super mom! You are going to love reading back on all this hard work that you've put into each and every post. And the pictures! (Am I embarrassing myself with all this gushing?!) One of Lily's favourite books (rather, one of *our* favourites, since Lily has the attention span of a fruit fly and is only captivated by a book for about 5 seconds when she puts it in her mouth and decides it doesn't taste good) is Phil Vischer's "The Veggiecational Book". I'm not sure where you can buy it now, but I got it from a Christian book store about 15 years ago. why? I have no idea. Lily was but a twinkle in my eye ;)

    1. Hey Kelly, thanks man, your comment made my day! VeggieTales, cool, I'll check it out. Yeah, it'll be interesting when the wee ones actually understand what a book is. Until then, I guess it's just another drool tool. Have a good weekend with your sweet fruit fly!

  2. I like Sandra Boynton! I like how her rhyming prose rolls off the tongue. What I don't like is the ever so popular "Goodnight Moon". Why do I have to say goodnight to EVERYTHING. Lucas doesn't have the patience for it either.

Lucas favourites (as in, he'll pay attention and stare at the pages) are Eric Carle's "Brown Bear" and "Polar Bear" books. I try to "read" it in Chinese but have no idea what flamingo or peacock is in Chinese. Can you help?

One of MY favourites is "On the Night You Were Born".

I'm growing Lucas' library one month at a time; each month I get him one new book. Thanks for the Oliver Jeffer's recommendation. It's going to be my September book.

    1. Yay for Brown Bear, I hope it'll soon be on Edie's hit list; she's still reading it with her teeth right now. I looked at the description of On the Night You Were Born, it sounds so beautiful!

Hey if you like rhyming prose, check out The Swing. It's an adaption of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson poem with fun retro illustrations. Oh, and it's published by a small Canadian publisher. It's my next purchase for E's library. Here's a trailer for the book (who knew books have trailers?!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUaJhfX1Lk8

As to the reading in Chinese, wow you're hardcore. My Chinese is crap! You should ask auntie Heidi, or if you wanna impress her, check out this Chinese pronunciation tool: https://sites.google.com/site/formainland/life-in-hong-kong/cantonese-learning/online-cantonese-pronunciation-tool
